Featured Artist: Lady GaGa

She's Got Us Like Nobody:
Meet the New Lady of Pop

Name? Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta.
Better known as Lady GaGa.

Lady GaGa (a nickname from Queen's "Radio Gaga") is but a mere 23 years old, but she's already accomplished more than people can keep up with. Her hit songs "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" are inescapable, the ravings of critics and fans seem endless, and the magazines can't get enough of her quirky and original style. But who was GaGa before becoming an international superstar?

Since a young age, Lady GaGa professes having a distinct and true passion for music and art. Her website claims she sang along to Michael Jackson and Cindy Lauper as a child, and danced to The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. She performed even in her childhood years and had a certain undeniable flair for theatrics. She learned to play the piano by ear by age 4, and by 13 had written her first piano ballad. At fourteen, she began performing in open mike nights, bringing her eccletic and quirkly style along for the ride. When she turned 17, she was one of 20 kids in the entire world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. On her twentieth birthday she was signed to Interscope records after having penned several songs for other artists, and was asked to continue writing for new ones as well.

The Fame was released in 2008 and was immediate success, still hovering in the Top Ten Album Downloads on iTunes Canada since its' release. “The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.” The album has hints of rock, disco and even burlesque amongst it's dance-pop and electro-pop feel, which is dressed up in Lady GaGa's theatrics and fashion choices. “I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” says GaGa. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”

"Poker Face" continues to be #1 hit across the globe, and "Just Dance" earned her a Grammy (!!) nomination for Best Dance Recording in 2009. Her recently dropped "Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)" and "LoveGame" singles continue to climb the charts, and tracks from The Fame are constantly pulled and played on a variety of TV shows. And this is just the beginning.

Lady Gaga, for me, represents everything I love about art. She may not be everyone's taste, but she certainly knows how to get people's attention. Her fashion choices are followed by fans and celebrities alike, who are inspired by GaGa and imitate her outfits or the infamous hair bow. Her music is diverse and appealing to many. Additionally, her songs are beautifully composed and written. They truly reminiscence the glamour of rock, pop, and disco. Like any true artist, she also cares about how to present her music, how to dress it up or down, and she constantly puts a new spin on them - her American Idol performance of "Poker Face" alone is a testament to this.

It truly is my opinion that we haven't seen anything yet, and Lady GaGa has tons of new tricks up her sleeve. Her legacy is just beginning. Make sure you don't miss out, her talent and visions make a true "artist" is the simplest and best definition of the term.
